IntegriCulture: Scientific Evaluation of Environmental Impacts in Cultivated Meat Production Process

RESEARCH

Potential to reduce environmental impact by over 70% through future production scaling

IntegriCulture Inc. (Fujisawa, Kanagawa; CEO: Yuki Hanyu), a pioneer in the platforming of cellular agriculture infrastructure, has conducted a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impact of Cultivated Meat production processes using its proprietary CulNet® System.

The research results have been published in the international academic journal Future Foods. This study was conducted in collaboration with Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, The University of Shiga Prefecture, and AIZOTH Inc.

Paper Summary

Background: Why environmental assessment of Cultivated Meat is necessary

As the global population grows, the increasing environmental burden from meat consumption has become a critical challenge. While Cultivated Meat is expected to be a key solution, concerns have been raised regarding high energy consumption during the production process—specifically in the manufacturing of culture medium used to grow cells.

Key Research Results & Proposals

  1. Identification of Environmental Impact Factors (Hotspots)
In current small-scale culture medium production processes, energy consumption, animal-derived raw materials, and consumables were identified as the primary drivers of environmental impact.
  2. Potential for Over 70% Reduction in Future Environmental Impact
The study demonstrated that environmental impact could be reduced by more than 70% compared to current methods by expanding production scale, implementing mechanization, improving energy efficiency, and utilizing renewable energy.
  3. Proposal for Further Reduction via Algae Utilization
The study suggests that transitioning the raw materials for culture medium, such as amino acids and sugars, to those derived from algae (which have a lower environmental footprint) is an effective mitigation strategy.

Comment from Yuki Hanyu, CEO of IntegriCulture Inc.
“The publication of this paper is a significant milestone for the CulNet® System, positioning it not just as a new food production technology, but as a foundation for sustainable food infrastructure. We are committed to building a future where everyone can continue to enjoy delicious food through low-impact technology grounded in scientific evidence.“

About the CulNet® System
The CulNet® System is the world’s first versatile cell culture platform capable of mass-cultivating cells at low cost by mimicking the internal environment of an animal’s body. Its primary feature is utilizing the power of cells to produce their own nutrients, eliminating the need for expensive external cell growth factors. This simultaneously achieves both cost reduction and environmental footprint reduction for Cultivated Meat.
